LIVING HEALTHY

Welcome to the Western School District’s web site on Living Healthy.

The rapid increase in overweight among children and adolescents is generating widespread concern. Since the 1970's, the prevalence of overweight has more than tripled for Canadian children 6 - 11 years. The latest statistics show that 36% of Newfoundland youth 2 - 17 years of age are overweight or obese, the highest rate in the country. For Newfoundland adults, it is 34%, a crisis in the making. With this are the associated risk factors of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. These risks can be reduced with nutritious food and physical activity.

If you walk, eat healthy food, canoe, chop wood, or take the dog for a walk, you are already involved in healthy eating and active living.  Now that you know where the site is, feel free to use it regularly as a source for information to help you and your students with the Living Healthy journey.
